VirtualBox can’t operate in VMX root mode. Please disable the KVM kernel extension, recompile your kernel and reboot (VERR_VMX_IN_VMX_ROOT_MODE).

If you use qemu and virtualbox on the same machine, you may encounter the following error :

VirtualBox can’t operate in VMX root mode. Please disable the KVM kernel extension, recompile your kernel and reboot (VERR_VMX_IN_VMX_ROOT_MODE).

With this message, you will be unable to run any virtual machine within Virtualbox. The root cause is either the kvm-intel or kvm-amd module  has been loaded at boot time. To remove it for your current session  :

root@localhost:~# lsmod |grep kvm
kvm_intel              32832  0
kvm                   182683  1 kvm_intel

root@localhost:~# modprobe -r kvm_intel

No more message like the one above will be displayed.

  1. Thanks that solved my problem too.
Btw: do you know how to import a virtual box image into kvm ? I exported the virtualbox machine to a ovf with vmdk disk. Importing it into kvm went also fine, but when I started the machine in KVM, I got the windows blue screen and it then keeps rebooting over and over.

    Any suggestions are appreciated!

      • No I didn’t I choose export to ovf format.
I will try to convert the VDI file to QCow as you suggested and let you know if it worked for me. Thanks for the quick reply!

      • Too bad. I converted the image with qemu-img to a qcow2 format.
It does boot and asks for which kind of windows boot I want ( safe modus, normal etc) , but it still comes up with the Blue Screen Of Death. Perhaps it has got nothing to do with KVM but just with the windows install.
